7 Ways to move more

We get it. Apart from a dedicated few, most of us would love to get more exercise to help us to stay fit and healthy. But it’s hard to find the time when you already have a jam-packed schedule with a long list of responsibilities. Between work, family and running a household, you’re lucky if you can find time to finish your coffee while it’s still warm!

The good news is, that you’re not alone and we’re here to help. You don’t need to train many hours every week to live a healthier lifestyle. By simply making small changes and consciously moving more, you can already reap the benefits.

Here are 7 ways you can keep your body moving throughout the day without having to take time out of your busy schedule. Just a few minutes of moving can really make a difference.

  1. Take the stairs

We know, you’ve probably heard this before, but that’s simply because it works! Instead of going the easy route with the elevator, take the stairs and see it as a mini work-out that will increase your heart rate and improve your leg strength.

  1. Try walking meetings

If you’re working from home and have tons of virtual meetings, try scheduling one where you don’t have to look at the screen, then plug in your headphones and walk around while you’re in the meeting. It’s a great break for your body to move a little after sitting in front of a screen for hours.

  1. When at work, walk

It’s so easy to use, “but I’m at work all day” as an excuse not to train but there are a few ways to move more at the office. Instead of using the closest restroom, walk to the other side of the building or use the coffee machine or printer the farthest from your desk.

  1. Sit on an exercise ball

Try swopping your office chair for an exercise ball. This can help to improve your posture and work your core stabilisers without you even noticing. It’s not only a great way to move your body more but it’s also fun to sit on a bouncy ball all day long.

  1. Park further away

We’re always trying to find the closest parking spot to the entrance of a building, but this is a great opportunity to increase your daily step count. Instead of waiting for an open parking spot, park a little further away and enjoy the stroll to the shops. It’s important to remember to always be aware of your surroundings and only park further away if it is a safe parking lot that is well-lit and where there are other people around.

  1. Foster a pet

Even if you don’t want the responsibility of having your own pet, you can always visit a shelter to play with the animals or take the dogs for walks. Take it even a step further and foster a dog that you can walk daily to get some exercise and spends some time with the kids.

  1. Stretch or exercise while you watch TV

We love a good marathon-series on the couch, but this tip utilises our amazing skill as women to multi-task. Try doing some light exercise or stretching while you watch a 30-minute episode of your favourite series! You can even try to do some bodyweight exercises with light free weights or enjoy going through your favourite Yoga flow.

Trying these tips won’t help you to run the next Two-Oceans marathon, but you’ll surely feel better just to add that little bit more movement to your everyday activities!
