Four ideas for the ultimate DIY spa day

Having the lockdown blues? Treat yourself to a DIY spa treatment using ingredients and beauty products you already have at home!

1. Moisturing hair treatment

This treatment needs only two ingredients and it’s great for all hair types.
You willneed
1 raw egg
A plastic hair covering

Beat the egg and mix it into half a cup of mayonnaise. Apply the mixture all over your hair, cover the hair with a plastic cap and sit with it for 20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
How does it work?
The oil found in the mayonnaise deeply moisturises hair and restores its shine. The egg serves as a cleaning agent as well as sealing in moisture in your hair. This rich mask is ideal for monthly treatments as its deep oil content can clog hair strands if repeated too often.

2. Facial mask

Look in the kitchen for the three simple ingredients that make up this cleansing, beautifying face mask.
You will need
2 tablespoons regular baking flour
1 teaspoon turmeric
3 tablespoons milk (or plain yoghurt)
Mix together the baking flour, turmeric and milk (or yogurt to make a paste. Apply a thin layer to your face and let it dry for 20 minutes. Scrub off gently, rinse with lukewarm water and apply your favourite moisturiser. For best results, do this facial mask weekly or twice a month, according to preference.
How does it work?
You’ve probably used turmeric before to spice curries or to add colour to your rice. But did you know that that it’s known to help reduce acne and the appearance of acne scarring?

3. Deep body scrub

Do you enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning? Turns out your skin might just love your favourite beverage too!
You will need
Half-cup of instant coffee granules
Half-cup of brown sugar
4 spoons of tissue oil (or coconut/any other scent you prefer)
1 drop vanilla oil
Mix together the instant coffee granules and brown sugar. Add four spoons of your preferred beauty oil and mix together to form a paste. Add a drop of vanilla to give your scrub a luxurious scent. Using circular motions, rub all over your body before rinsing. This exfoliating scrub can be done weekly as part of your beauty regime.
How does it work?
The sand-like texture of the coffee granules makes for a great exfoliant because it removes dead skin cells. The caffeine in coffee also works to boost circulation and is known to improve the appearance of cellulite.

4. Nourishing foot treatment

This deep moisturising treatment is the perfect bedtime routine as it will not only allow your feet to soak up all the moisture overnight but also keep them warm and cosy.
You will need
Vaseline or your favourite beauty oil like coconut, magnolia or tissue oil
Rub a generous amount of Vaseline on your feet, or use any type of oil you prefer, like coconut or olive oil. Wear socks over the lubricated feet for as long as you can.
How does it work?
The vaseline moisturises dry and cracked feet, creating soft skin, while the socks trap in moisture for deep nourishing.
