Playful Pizza (let the kids make their own)

If there’s one thing most kiddies love, it’s pizza! Turn your time at home into a wonderful opportunity to try different things and to create new and delicious memories.

Follow this recipe together with your children for a guaranteed fun and yummy time.

For the pizza base you will need:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon active yeast powder
  • 1 1/2 cups flour (self-raising or all-purpose)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • Tomato puree
  • Toppings of your choice (cold meats like ham or bacon are popular with children, or maybe even try pineapple)
  • 1 1/2 cups grated cheese

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C.
  2. Supervise your child as they add the water to the yeast in a medium sized bowl. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Next, have them add the sugar, flour and salt to the yeast mixture and mix together using using their clean hands until it forms a silky ball of dough.
  4. Divide the dough out between you and your child and help them to knead it. To knead pizza dough, you should put the dough on a lightly floured surface. Put some flour on your hands, then use the base of your palm to push down and forward into the dough, then fold over the top of the dough back onto itself and repeat the same thing again. You will need to repeat this a number of times. Add a little more water if the dough is too dry (crumbles into pieces) or a little more flour if the dough is too sticky. When the dough seems to be smooth and elastic, it is ready. Combine the dough again into one lump and allow it to sit for 5 minutes and then roll it out onto a floured work surface with a rolling pin.
  5. Take turns with your children to roll the dough and try to roll it as thinly as possible.
  6. Fold the dough in half and then half again and transfer it quickly to a baking tray that you have either lined with baking paper, or sprayed with Spray and Cook, or coated with a thin layer of butter.
  7. Bake for 3 minutes at 220°C
  8. Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C. Take the base out of the oven and then spread over the tomato puree and place toppings onto this. Bake for another 5-7 minutes until the cheese has melted and has started to brown.
