Summer is the time to enjoy the warm rays of sunshine, but without proper protection, your baby’s skin can suffer painful damage. So remember to protect the whole family against the sun.
While your child is still a baby, it is advisable that you hold back on sun lotion until after they are six months old. Even then you should only use products that are made specifically for infants. This applies to children of all ages – their sun care lotions have to be suitable for their age, as well as their activities. For example, use waterproof lotion if they will be swimming.
Here’s how you can further protect them:
Timing
The sun is harshest at midday. If you can’t plan indoor activities, try to keep them out of direct sunlight between 10am and 2pm.
Clothing
Dress them in light clothing that covers their skin. They will not get hot from their clothes while remaining protected from the sun.
Hats and blankets
Choose a hat that offers complete cover from the sun. If you’re carrying your child on your back, use a light cotton cloth to wrap and cover them. This will prevent them from overheating.
Cool from the inside
Remember to keep them hydrated with water throughout the day, whether you are spending time at the beach or playing at home.
4 signs that your child has overheated
- Hot – They feel hot to the touch.
- Dizzy – They seem confused or dizzy.
- Rash – They have a heat rash.
- Nauseous – They start vomiting for no reason.
