Affordable holiday activities for you and your family

It can be challenging to keep kids entertained during the holidays. Here are affordable activities to keep the gang busy.

At home

  • Make your own pizzas with frozen pizza bases and some toppings.
  • Play board games.
  • Rent DVDs and host a movie night, complete with popcorn.
  • Get baking. Make muffins or cookies and let the kids ‘help’.
  • Re-enact bedtime stories.
  • Let them make lunch – give them cookie cutters to create crafty sandwiches or arrange sliced up veggies in different shapes. Lunchtime is more interesting, it teaches them about doing things for themselves and doubles up as a fun indoor activity.

  • Take them to the library. They usually have a holiday programme.
  • Take the kids to a (free) museum. Go to and click on ‘museum list’ for one close to you.
  • Play with them. Switch off the TV and re-discover books, puzzles and old toys.
  • Do a workshop together. Check out your library notice board for ideas.
  • Visit the airport. The kids will love watching the planes take off.
  • Pack a picnic basket (sandwiches, water, cooldrinks and a few snacks) and head off to your local swimming pool or beach. Don’t forget the sunblock!
  • Set up a canvas and let your little ones paint. Then place their completed artwork in a special place where everyone can admire it. They will be super-proud if you display it.
  • Splurge when there’s a special. There may be days everyone just needs to get out. So keep an eye on the news and social media for holiday special offers and discounts or take advantage of year-round offers like half-price movies or kids-eat-free specials.
  • Take a trip to the mall and enjoy ice cream and games.
  • Get their creative juices flowing– with a few pipe cleaners and a little paint, an empty toilet paper roll can soon be a zebra, flower, serviette ring or even a superhero!
  • Get them gardening – growing plants and getting your hands dirty is great fun and educational.

Tip Check the entertainment websites or local newspapers for holiday entertainment, often for free.
