How to look after your acrylic nails

We chat to the queen of beautiful manicures, Siya Mfana of Siya Mfana Nailbar. She gives us her top tips on keeping your acrylic nails looking beautiful and looking after your natural nails.

Siya’s top 5 tips

  • Treat your nails gently. Wear heavy-duty gloves for your daily cleaning, gardening and any other manual labour.
  • If it involves any metal hardware, leave it to the pros. Visit your nail technician to clip your acrylic nails, fix serious lifts or breaks, and for refills.
  • Avoid acetone. Acetone nail polish remover, turpentine and heat will weaken your nails.
  • Do not leave your acrylic nails on for longer than two weeks. Your acrylics will grow out, making them easier to damage. If you fail to keep up with routine fills, your nail technician will have to break off your acrylics and start from scratch, which could damage your real nails.
  • Apply cuticle oil as often as you like on your cuticles. This is extremely good for the health of your real nails. Once a week is sufficient for most people but those who have dry skin, can do it every second day.
