Spring Beauty Hacks by Mzansi Beauty Gurus

We chatted to Cape Town-based makeup gurus, makeup artist Lesley Solomons (@la_makeup_artistry) and blogger Nicole Norman (@nicole.norman), to get the lowdown on solving some of our summer beauty hacks.

How to choose the perfect red lip

Lesley says: ‘There are two types of reds to choose from: an orange-red, which is for people with a yellow undertone, and a blue-red for people with pink or cool skin undertones.’

With that said, there are different intensities of the orange and red pigment in each lipstick and therefore will vary from skin tone to skin tone. The best way is to apply all of them on your arm and choose what suits you best.

Pro tip: Add a matching lip pencil to make your lipstick last longer and prevent it from bleeding. Learn more about the latest lip makeup trends.

How to stay matte when wearing foundation

Nicole says: ‘A good base is the foundation of foundation – see what I did there? 😉 Moisturise and apply primer before you put on foundation. ‘I like to top things off with a good setting powder and you’re good to go for a few hours!’

Pro tip: Keep some blotting paper or a compact powder with a mirror in your handbag for touch-ups on the go!

How to get your eyebrows to be even

Lesley and Nicole share the sentiment that eyebrows are sisters, not twins – so they don’t have to be 100% identical. Eyebrows are so important, as they frame your face. But it can be a bit daunting when it comes to filling and shaping them. Lesley recommends starting off lightly, framing the outer part of your eyebrows and then filling in the brow. Nicole suggests following the natural shape of your brows and simply enhancing what’s already there – that’s the ultimate key to brows on fleek!

Pro tip: Brush out your eyebrows after applying product. It helps create a realistic brow and adds a little more pressure and colour to create a slaying Instagram brow.
