Decoding the athleisure trend

From the fashion runway of Paris Fashion Week to everyday street style, the athleisure trend is popping up everywhere and not going away anytime soon. Fashion savvy celebrities like Beyoncé and Kanye West have caught on to the rise of activewear in fashion and they have cofounded and collaborated with other brands to produce some of the world’s most popular active brands – Ivy Park by Beyoncé and Yeezy by Kanye West.
Athleisure is such an influential trend that even the Marriam Webster dictionary decided to include it in its list of words. They have defined the term as “casual clothing meant to be worn both for exercising and for general use”.
What this means is that your favourite comfortable clothing items, like tights, sneakers and hoodies, can be styled in such a way that it looks stylish and trendy, whether you’re running errands, going for some retail therapy or a coffee date with the girls at the shopping mall, or heading out to the gym. This trend is appropriate for the whole family, especially for those who favour comfort and have a laid-back sense of style.
There are various levels to the athleisure trend and choosing items that have extra detail on them or are tailored and trimmed in specials ways, ensures your outfit will go from ordinary to extraordinary.

Here’s what to look out for and keep in mind when selecting athleisure outfits:

• The cut: T-shirts, hoodies, pants and dresses come in several cuts, including cropped, high-low and slouchy.
• The detailing: Choose eye-catching and trendy details. Think stripes, funky pockets with extra detail on them like net and lace, and bold zips.
• The fabric: Cotton is a popular material for activewear, but polyester, spandex, nylon and wool are also widely used and sometimes combined with other materials, such as mesh and net, to ensure a fashionable outfit.
