Amazing ways with maize meal

Maize meal is a staple in many homes, but did you know you can use pap in other non-traditional ways?

Banana maize muffins

Try adding half a cup of maize meal to your banana muffins. This will make them soft but firm.

You will need

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup maize meal
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3 large bananas, mashed
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted


  1. Preheat oven to 180C and coat muffin pans with non-stick spray or cooking oil. Sift together the flour, maize meal, baking powder, bicarb and salt. Set aside. Combine bananas, sugar, egg and melted butter in a large bowl. Fold in flour mixture and mix until smooth. Scoop into muffin pans.
  2. Bake in preheated oven. Bake mini muffins for 10 to 15 minutes, and large muffins for 25 to 30 minutes.

To check if the muffins are cooked, lightly tap them. If they ‘spring’ back, they’re ready. If the tapping leave a hole, it’s still raw.

Maize meal foot scrub

You will need

  • ½ cup to 1 cup maize meal
  • ½ cup to 1 cup of water
  • a bar of soap


  1. Make a paste with water and maize meal.
  2. Soak feet in hot water for 15 minutes.
  3. Lather soap on the feet and then apply the maize meal paste and rub it in circular motions around the foot.
  4. Rinse off and apply cream and wear socks overnight for added suppleness.
