Free outdoors games kids will love

Keep your children occupied with these fun and free outdoor games.

1 Recycled bottle bowling

Turn your backyard into a bowling alley with this DIY game. Line up empty plastic bottles and use a ball to knock them over. You can even paint the bottles to make them look like bowling pins.

 2 Broom skills

  • Place a broom on the ground and have your children run back and forth while jumping over the broom. It’s great exercise!
  • Get your child to balance a broom on the palm of their hand. The broom will probably fall a few times, but that’s part of the fun. You can even have a small prize, like a chocolate, for the one who can balance the broom the longest.
  • Hold the broom at various heights and get the kids to try and go under without touching it. Start holding it high up and then lower the broom each time. When it starts to get tricky, the kids will have to find creative ways to go under, like crawling, rolling or sliding. This will stimulate their creativity while getting them to exercise without even realising it. TIP Your arms will get tired of holding the broom up, so put the one end of the broom against a wall.

 3 Can telephone

Take two empty cans (make sure the edges are smooth). Make a small hole in the bottom of each can. Attach the two cans with a long piece of string (wool or thin rope works well). Thread the one end of the string through the hole in one of the cans and tie a knot on the inside of the can so that string can’t slip through the hole. Repeat with the other end of the string and the other can. Now let the kids stand away from each other until the string is tight. Then make yourself comfortable for long, fun conversations. This game is even more fun when the two can’t see each other, because then they have to listen carefully to try and hear what the other one is saying. So make them stand around the corners of your home, for example.
