Packing for the holidays

Whilst we love our holidays – from spending time with friends and family to some much needed me-time after a hectic year – the packing can be a bit of a nightmare. Ask anyone who has ever had a bottle of something spill over all your clothes or the struggle of making it all fit!

Clever packing

We have some tips and tricks to make packing that much easier:

Roll your clothes instead of folding them.

Rolled clothes take up less space than folded clothes and they are less likely to get creases.

Pack your light coloured clothing inside out.

This helps prevent them from getting stains.

Pack in advance.

There is nothing worse than forgetting to pack something important and then having to buy it at your destination. You don’t want to use your holiday spending money for stuff you actually have at home – like underwear, toothbrush, lotion and deodorant. So make a list that you can tick off and pack in advance to make sure you have everything. Leaving your packing for the last minute is asking for trouble.

Know your airline or bus’s baggage policy.

Check out their website or call them to make sure your luggage is the correct size and weight. If you’re flying, make double sure about what is allowed in your hand luggage. Unauthorised items (containers with too much liquid, metal nail file) will be confiscated!

Layer up when you get on your mode of transport.

During a long trip you will get both hot and cold at times whilst you travel. Lighten your luggage by layering and make sure to pack items that you can layer for warm and cooler days. (Use a folded-up jersey and fluffy gown as a cushion and blanket on the bus! J)

Keep your essentials close-by.

Make sure to have the following items in your handbag/backpack:

  • ID book or passport
  • Wallet
  • Lip balm
  • Hand moisturiser*
  • Hand sanitiser*
  • Tissues (for a runny nose, dirty hands and toiletpaper)
  • Ackermans magazine
  • Notebook and pen
  • A healthy snack
  • A bottle of water*
  • Feminine hygeine products

(*Remember to make sure of the maximum amount you’re allowed when flying.)
