When we’re busy it’s so easy to get stuck in a style rut. Jodine Darare from Springs in Johannesburg was nominated by her two daughters. Our team gave her a day of pampering and hair and make-up advice she’ll never forget.
For Jodine a lesson in tonal dressing was great because it’s easy to get right if you know the basics. Tonal dressing means you either wear multiple shades of the same colour or one colour from head to toe. This style of dressing is simple but really sophisticated if it’s done right. When wearing multiple layers of the same shade, it can add dimension to your outfit and also cleverly hide any areas you don’t like.
1 Mix casual pieces with dressier ones. For example, jeans and tucked-in tunic never looked better. Add metallic touches for dimension. Think silver, gold or even grey – these can give your tired outfit an instant lift.
2 Tonal outfits are sophisticated and can make you look taller and leaner. Give your look some personality with a pop of colour in your accessories or shoes.
3 A bold print in the same or similar shade brings your look to life. A tunic top is a must-have because it can look smart with a pencil skirt and casual with jeans. A neutral-colour belt at your waist will emphasise your curves.
We applied foundation to even out Jodine’s skin tone and gave her a quick lesson in contouring, which will help her to accentuate her features.
We then applied a bronze eyeshadow on her brow bone and eyelids. Next a plum shade was applied to her eyelid followed by black eyeshadow in the corners and crease of her eyelids. The colours were blended together using a blending brush to create a subtle smokey eye. Bronzer on her cheeks and a soft plum lipstick finished off her look.
The ViVi curl weave is fresh and frames her face perfectly for a youthful appearance. This look is glamorous but low maintenance.
