Handy tricks with salt

Remove watermarks from wood

Mix one teaspoon of salt with a few drops of water until it forms a paste. Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently rub the paste onto the watermark until the spot is gone.

Deodorise smelly sneakers

Keep your sneakers and canvas shoes smelling fresh by occasionally sprinkling a little salt in them. The salt will soak up the moisture and get rid of odours.

Stop oven spills from hardening

There’s nothing worse than trying to scrape off oven spills after they’ve hardened. Pour a handful of salt over your spill while it is still hot. When the oven has cooled down, you’ll be able to wipe the spill away with a cloth. You can do the same with the stovetop.

TIP Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon with the salt to remove any odours.

Prevent cheese from moulding

Don’t throw away cheese because of mould. Wrap your cheese in a cloth napkin soaked in salt water before you put it in the fridge. This will prevent mould growing.

Remove perspiration stains

Dissolve four tablespoons of salt in one litre of hot water. Sponge the garment with the solution until the stain disappears. Goodbye stubborn yellow perspiration stains on shirts!
