How to choose a school backpack

Here are some tips to consider when selecting a backpack.

1. Shoulder straps

Look for a pair of wide, padded shoulder straps to help distribute weight evenly and reduce the risk of muscle strain or injury. Make sure your child wears both shoulder straps.

2. Reflector

Choose a bag with reflective strips – these offer protection and make your child more visible to cars and bicycles.

3. Size

Bigger isn’t always better. The school bag should fit snugly against your child’s back, leaving their neck free. Rather buy a separate sports bag for sports clothes.

4. Weight

Look for a bag with compartments. This will make it easier to distribute the weight evenly.

5. Fabric

Synthetic fabrics such as nylon or polyester are more water-resistant.

These tips will help prevent back pain:
• Make sure the packed bag doesn’t weigh more than 10% of your child’s body weight.
• Pack bulky or point objects away from the area against the back.
• Make sure the bag doesn’t hang more than 9cm below your child’s waistline.
