Spice up your braai mielies

Try something new the next time you roast mielies over the coals. This recipe offers a tasty twist on an old favourite.

Serves: 6
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes


  • 6 mielies (with or without the husk)
  • vegetable oil
  • 75g butter or margarine
  • 30ml spice mixture (make your own by crushing some peanuts and mixing in dried spices such as coriander, cumin, chilli powder and pepper)
  • 10ml lemon juice


  1. Brush each mielie with a little oil. Cook over medium-hot coals on the braai for about 15 minutes. Turn often to ensure they cook evenly.
  2. Mix the butter or margarine, spice mixture and lemon juice together. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Serve the mielies with a dollop of the spicy butter.
